Wondering about therapy?

While there can be a specific reason to seek therapy, it’s not always clear.  At any age we can find ourselves out of our depth, and/or in the midst of despair.
Therapy offers us an opportunity to engage in self and interpersonal exploration and to make meaningful connections in our lives. It is a place where together, we can navigate life’s many challenges and work to develop strength and resilience. Our psychotherapy sessions will be holistic and address barriers to healing at the level of mind, body and spirit.

I use an integrative client-centered approach and draw from a number of therapeutic modalities in order to tailor my approach for you. Kayla has over 10 years of experience in clinical counselling for individual, marriage, and family therapy. Kayla has advanced knowledge in providing culturally responsive care for individuals navigating the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural background. She is committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of both the 2SLGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, reading, and trying new foods. Maybe some of your hobbies overlap with mine? Whatever the answer, I’m looking forward to getting to know you. In my 10 years of experience, one thing I’ve learned is that all things change when we do- so let’s get started!

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

As people go through life, they often experience overwhelming emotions, negative thoughts, and behaviors, without really knowing why they are feeling or reacting the way they are and how to cope with it. Often, it can be an underlying trauma, or unmet needs driving their experiences.

In my work, I take a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach towards therapy. I use tools from a wide variety of therapeutic approaches to fit the client’s unique needs and goals in therapy. Some of the approaches I use include CBT, DBT, Attachment theory, and Polyvagal theory.

My work is dedicated to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients. I believe in the power of building a strong therapeutic relationship. This enables the client to be vulnerable and talk through their deepest and most painful emotional wounds. They become aware of their needs, and how their trauma may be impacting them. They learn skills and ways to manage their emotions and behaviors in a way that results in a more fulfilling life for them.

Experience:

Sana is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and a Yorkville University graduate with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. Adolescent years bring their fair share of difficulties such as school-related stress, self esteem issues, and parent-child conflicts. Sometimes these difficulties translate into adulthood, impacting our mental health.

To help individuals during this tough phase, I use a culturally responsive and socially just model of counselling combined with my belief that the client knows their identity best, and I use this understanding to learn from the client. I strive to create a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment and value the importance of the therapeutic relationship so clients can move forward with ease. My lived experience with mental health motivates me to use a person-centered approach to counselling as I truly believe that the client has the power and knowledge to create positive change in their lives.

So many individuals and families struggle with accessing the mental health care they need. You might feel overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, depression, or daily pressures and are unsure of how to cope. I understand the importance of building a strong foundation and providing personalized tools and strategies to manage your mental health and feel your best.

Creating connection with the people we love and enjoying the smaller moments in life make the biggest impact on our mental health and wellbeing. For a matter of fact, I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) about two years ago. There is an incredible sense of discipline, focus, and camaraderie that comes with practicing this martial art. It's not just about physical strength but also about mental agility and the art of self-defense. That of which has taught me to incorporate into therapeutic practice the importance of setting goals, pushing through challenges, and finding balance in life.

When you work with me, you'll quickly see that I'm not just a therapist who understands the theories and techniques. I'm someone who knows firsthand the transformative power of pursuing passions and finding outlets for stress relief. I believe in the power of integrating practical aspects of our daily life into the therapeutic process.

Experience
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and currently completing my Master’s degree at Yorkville
University. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology (B. Sc.) at Dalhousie University and completed
my post graduate program in Addictions and Mental Health (ADMH) at Humber College. Over the past three years, I have worked at Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK), where I have provided support to
families accessing mental health programs and played a role in developing and implementing strategies to enhance services for individuals.

Are you tired of being tired, worried, or sad and wondering how you can break this cycle for a better quality of life.

I work with parents; both new and experienced, to help them manage the relentless demands of being a parent while balancing their own identity and mental health. I also work with teens and young adults managing their own struggles navigating all challenges of growing up, all the major transitions they’re about to go through while managing their mental health along the way.

I aim to create a warm, non-judgemental, interactive safe space for self-discovery, self- awareness and growth. This is the forefront of our therapeutic journey.
